Marceline Abadeer: Henchman Dress

This was actually made as a test piece for the Flower dress (haven't actually uploaded a blog post about that dress because I want to get proper photos of it). I wanted to check whether the pattern would look good. I didn't actually add bones to the bodice, but it still looks all right. The bodice is made a striped velour, lined with cotton. The pink sash is made from cotton.

To emulate the spikey look of the dress in the episode, I sewed on some black lace (I think it's called Guipere lace or Venise lace?).

We used Snazaroo facepaint, but I didn't seal it properly and it rubbed off: luckily this was only a photoshoot. If I wear this costume to a convention I'll need a proper sealant.

Malta Comic Con Photoshoot: Juliet and Fionna

Long time no update, but vet school has been taking up a lot of my time. Coupled with the fact that I don't have a sewing machine at the moment, that means I don;t have much to write about. However, I recently was able to go back to Malta. Fortunately Malta Comic Con organised a photoshoot to promote the 2015 convention, so I brought a couple of costumes along.

The first costume to get photos was Sakizou's Juliet.

The photos were taken at Magazino Hall on the Waterfront. Part of the building will be used to house the convention, but we used the more run down part of the building for the shoot. I wore the worst shoes for this type of building: very uncomfortable white heels that made walking difficult and even a bit painful. That's what you get for wearing badly fitting shoes.

I changed quickly into my Fionna costume. Luckily I wore the same wig for both costumes, which saved time.

I've had this rusty old sword in my wardrobe for a long time, and thought it would be perfect for Fionna.

My dress did get a couple of marks from dust and dirt. Hopefully those will wash out! You can see the uncomfortable shoes in this photo: I bought them for Madokami (that project isn't progressing any time soon :( ) but they are too big and mega uncomfortable: I stuffed the toes with tissue paper to try to make them fit, and now they are even more uncomfortable.

ADVENTURE TIME! Fionna

A friend of mine wants to do an Adventure Time skit and asked if I'd like to be Fionna. Of course I said yes: Adventure Time is one of my favourite shows. I love the combination of surreal humour with an apocalyptic back story and occasional drama.

A quick breakdown of the costume:

  • Top: Ebay, but I took it in for a better fit
  • Wig: Ebay
  • Skirt: Also ebay. Fits perfectly
  • Socks: I made these by pinning white lycra around my legs. The stripes are not actually drawn on the socks, but actually are on a separate piece of lycra. This piece of lycra is like a garter, so if I need the socks for something else, I don't have to worry about hiding the stripes - I can just removed the garter.
  • Bag: I had some leftover chintz which I painted green and sewed into a bag. There's a zip in the centre of the bag, so it is actually functional (because what's the point of non functional bags?)
  • Hat: I love fleece, which is just as well, because I've made and remade Fionna's bunny hat several times for my etsy shop. This is a simple fleece hat that fastens under the chin with a snap. The most recent hats have pipe cleaners inside the ears to help hold the ears upright. If you want me to make you a Finn or Fionna hat, you can request one from my etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MalteseLizzieMcGee?ref=hdr_shop_menu
