Steampunk July Sale

New items in my etsy shop. July seems to be steampunk month!

40 Euro
I’m selling these to help raise money for university. I was accepted into a veterinary medicine course. Now I doubt I’ll raise enough money to cover tuition but a bit of extra money will definitely help me out. I also want to get rid of things that I won’t have room for, and I really don’t want to throw anything out.

Silk Maiden

Firstly, I've added two new items to my etsy: some grey and black striped arm warmers, made from an old t-shirt, and a pair of black fleece button-up leg warmers. Feel free to check them out.

Secondly I've finally got some pictures of the completed Silk Maiden dress.
Gogo is my Cheshire cat for the day.
I forgot to wear my bow and my gloves for this costume: oh well.
Went to the Avengers premier dressed like this. The Joker and an Anbu ninja were there too.

How I made this dress:
The bodice of this dress was based on a kimono style top pattern. I had to lengthen that pattern and draft out the darts to get the right shape. The enormous puff sleeves came from Burda's Danielle pattern.
The skirt is a simple half circle skirt. The obi/apron belt is basically two trapezoids sewn together. It fastens with hooks and eyes (I love hook and eye tape). I drafted the apron myself. It tapers out so that it is larger at the bottom, the form a curve with a point in the centre. You can't really see the point in the pictures.

Materials: The aim behind this dress was to use up as much material in my collection of cloth as possible. The main fabric came from some old tablecloths (love things, wit a scalloped edge). It was thin, so I lined it, mostly with cotton, though one piece was so big that I had to use a large piece of chintz. The skirt was lined with the remnants of an old satin skirt.

I used pink satin for the obi and the ruffle on the bottom of the skirt. The hot pink fabric came from an old umbrella. The apron is white cotton, lined with an old sheet. The design on it was drawn on with fabric markers. The ribbons on the obi do not go all the way round: I miscalculated the amount of ribbon I needed.

I had to replace the invisible zip that I used, because it was 10cm too short, and made it really difficult to get in and out of the dress. the new 40cm zip makes it a lot easier to put the dress on.

Alice wear an omega necklace for all her costumes, so I made that too. I used polymer clay and painted it green, then strung it on a piece of black wool.

Etsy: Chokers

Hello world. I've uploaded some new items to my etsy shop.

Bottlecap Lace Choker
Firstly, this bottlecap choker (don't ask me why it is rotated-blogger seems to have a glitch). I found a bunch of pink Diet Coke bottlecaps in London, and snatched up as amny as I could (to the surprise of passers by). I turned this one into a pretty beaded pendant, and sewed it to this strip of stretch lace (salvaged from a pair of leggings).
Mechanical Marvel Steampunk Lace Choker
Secondly, this steampunk style lace choker, with a gear shaped pendant. I originally made this for a steampunk costume, but the time has come for it to find a new home. The lace is the same kind used for the pink bottlecap choker.

Etsy!

I have just opened an Etsy shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/MalteseLizzieMcGee?ref=pr_shop_more . I've actually been planning on doing this for a long time. At Malta Comic Con 2011, I made a good amount from selling necklaces, mini top hats and postcards. I also had a lot of interest in my costumes. So I've started a shop to sell them at :)
Right now I've listed some gorgeous craft supplies: a bundle of 18 pheasant tail feathers.http://www.etsy.com/listing/95542725/pheasant-tail-feathers
Check them out :)

Quick pre-exam update

Before exams hit next week, I wanted to be able to get a little writing in.
Firstly, I'm working on making a tartan biker dress, as on my wish list of things to make. I need to redye it, because the first round of dying didn't cover it properly: I think I need to use a bigger dye vessel.

I'm a bit stretched for finances due to some travelling expenses I'll be incurring. I'm considering opening an etsy shop. The price of registration of items seems relatively inexpensive, and if I can sell items at a good price it would probably cover any postage expenses (I'm not sure whether the seller pays for postage or the buyer). Does anyone have experience as an etsy seller who can advise me?

Being stretched for finances doesn't mean that I won't make the costumes on my wish list. The Babydoll costume is going ahead, though I will be using old clothes to make it (I have a sweater dress which, after a little dye, will be perfect). The same goes for the Mrs Lovett costume. I'm also making a Mad March hare costume, for which I will raid my fabric stash (I have a fabulous old t-shirt which I will use to make waistcoat lining)
